This past Saturday was the last race of the 2009 meet at Thunder Ridge Race Course in
Prestonsburg, Kentucky. As the last race was going official, there was anxiety in one horsemen’s
veins. He was spinning his tires as he went out of the stable gate, in a hurry to get to
Lexington's Red Mile that starts in three weeks.
As I approached the 1978 Ford pickup with the straight load three horse trailer hooked behind it
(that was missing one of it tires on the passenger’s side) looking like something from the
Beverly Hillbillies show, I asked “What’s the hurry guys”.
The hillbilly wearing the straw hat and overalls, with a jug half filled with HOME-GROWN
MOONSHINE by his side, looked at me and said,
“Son if you had a meet like I did, you be in a hurry to get out of here too. Plus old dusty can't
get over 15 miles an hour anymore. And we have to dodge the law since;
- 1. Dusty isn’t legal
2. We owe the feed man
3. We owe that vet.
4. We owe the moron that calls himself a blacksmith. And
5. I heard the Loney boy has all the doe since that DA kid has been claiming off him.”
When they were rolling away the guy in the passenger seat, who by the way, looked like an
intoxicated Howdie Doodie, hung his head out the window and yelled, "Man we're soooo happy
.... because after seven months of being over classed in the non winners of a $100 per start,
the race secretary in Lex is writing a race for our three horses that are non winners of a dime in
2009. Only for horses that raced at the Downs and the Ridge.”
As I watched them drive away over that beautiful mountain sunset I thought to myself, should
they be going to Lexington, or should they be making a trip to Arthur Illinois (an Amish town)
or to West Memphis Southland Dog Track. Then again, I guess as long as they're officially FIXIN
races for these horse's, there's no rhyme or reason they should go there. (Amish country).
