The History of Harness Racing
by Madison Cullipher (a 4-H Project)

The Standardbred Racehorse
Standardbreds originated form the crossing of Morgans and Thoroughbreds.
The name Standardbred comes from the breed needing to be able to trot or
pace a mile in a standard time.

Murcielago wins for 13 yr old owner
In early March, Madison Cullipher asked her dad if $500 would buy a horse
that could make money. Curious to the question, her dad asked, "who wants
to buy a horse for $500?" Madison replied, "I do. Mom said I was going to
have to switch back to my old phone (from the iphone) cause the bill is too
high." Madison went on to say she had already saved up $270. Her dad
explained the difficulties in finding a profitable horse for $500 and that it
may be easier to use the $500 to buy a smaller percentage of a horse. Or to
keep saving.

While attending qualifiers in latter March at Hoosier Park, Madison's dad ran
across trainer Brian Hauck who had a horse for sale named Murcielago. The
two agreed on a price and the deal was done -- Madison had her a race
horse.

Murcielago had to be conditioned before he'd be ready to qualify. By the
middle of May he had qualified. And after two starts at Hoosier Park it was
determined that Murcielago would be better suited at a cheaper track like
Bluegrass Downs.

On June 24, Murcielago won his first race at Bluegrass Downs for new owner
Madison Cullipher. He followed up with another win just two days later making
it back to back wins.

For now, Madison's iphone is safe.
And They're Off.....The Circus Is Up and Running
The meet began with the fairs finals. Which keep in mind that they (the fair
finals) had originally be scheduled for Saturday August 6 to be follow by the
"KHHA banquet" and the meet to kick off the following day -- Sunday August 7.

Thanks to KHHA Executive Secretary / Red Mile employee Gabe Prewitt, Red
Mile President Joe Costa, and Bobby Stewart and the KHHA board of directors,
that all changed recently. Somebody (one of the above) came up with the idea
of moving the fair finals to Sunday
(a day originally set for the overnight horses.)

Great idea if you're working for the Red Mile. Bad idea if you're working for the
horsemen. By moving the fair finals to Sunday means that many of horsemen
with overnight horses lost another day of racing.
(of which these horsemen will be
needing when its considered the Sire Stakes legs on Aug. 21, Sept.1, and Sept. 11
will take 3 days from overnight racing opportunities)
 Not to mention some officials
who work the fairs were stripped of a days pay (as their services were not
needed).

KHHA executive secretary / Red Mile employee, Gabe Prewitt said he "sort of
played the middle man" in negotiating the moving fair finals from Saturday to
the Sunday the first day of the fall meet. Gabe also saw nothing wrong with
contacting trainers to let them know which divisions had few entries on the
morning of the fair finals draw.
