LEXINGTON , Ky. (May 8, 2008) – The Kentucky Horse
Racing Authority (KHRA) at its next meeting will be asked
by its chairman to consider forming a work group to
review thoroughbred horse racing health and safety
concerns.

Robert M. Beck Jr., appointed KHRA chairman last month
by Governor Steve Beshear, said the proposed work
group will look at several issues and bring
recommendations to the authority.

“I envision the group would assemble information that has
already been prepared by other organizations and assess
the need for additional work on safety issues,” Beck said.
“We also want to work with other industry organizations,
owners, breeders, trainers and jockeys to make
improvements to the racing community.”

Beck noted the KHRA has adopted race day medication
rules designed to enhance the health and welfare of the
horse, as well as protect the integrity of horse racing in
the state. KHRA veterinarians currently perform race day
leg exams for horses and review health records for
potential health problems.

Various organizations have been working on health and
safety concerns regarding thoroughbred horse racing the
past several years. The Jockey Club and the Grayson-
Jockey Club Research Foundation worked together for
2006 and 2008 summits on the issues of welfare and
safety.

The KHRA is scheduled to meet May 19 at the Kentucky
Horse Park in Lexington
